This was a very short novel that we started a class in American Literature with. Because it was so short I found it an easy read, though the poor main character: Tommy Wilhelm is so terribly depressed, which could be hard to handle, however the character is so finely developed that the reader can’t help but feel something for him, even if it is a desire to give him a good swift kick in the rear. I found myself identifying with parts of his situation, and actually felt like he was a person I knew very well. Bellow definitely has knack for getting into the character’s head. (This novel is a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature)
